Best theory test apps to help you pass first time

Last updated: 25/04/2022 | Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

When it comes to taking your theory test, preparation is key. But if you don’t want to lug a copy of the Highway Code around with you, theory test apps are the way to go.

We’ve put a few of the best ones under the spotlight:

In This Guide:

Driving Theory Test 4-in-1

Available on iOS and Android, this app has a lot going for it. It essentially offers all the content of the official DVSA app but in a more approachable way; for starters, it’s colourful, user-friendly and easy to navigate, and has been designed with young learner drivers in mind.

If you’re confident with the Highway Code but want to brush up on road signs, then these parts are separated, unlike in the Official DVLA Theory Test Kit. In the same vein, if there’s an area you want to learn more about – let’s say fog lights - then you can search for specific terms and categories within the app.

You’ll also be able to take unlimited mock test and track your progress. Not only that, as the best-selling theory app in the UK, the creators claim that if you fail your theory test after using the app then they’ll give you the theory fee back – if that doesn’t speak confidence to its offering, we don’t know what does.

On top of tall that, once you pass your theory test, the app also offers over 30 practical driving lesson video tutorials.

It’ll cost you £4.99 to download.

Official DVSA Theory Test Kit

Available on iOS and Android, this is the official DVSA app. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are the ones who set the theory test, so you know it’s going to be accurate.

Along with the app, you’ll get full access to the Highway Code, though this is in book form. The app is also available with an audio feature, meaning the questions will be read out to you.

Surprisingly, it doesn’t offer a full mock theory test, only mock questions, which in our opinion sets it back compared to the 4-in-1 Kit. Similarly, it doesn’t include sections on road signs or the ability to search for specific terms, though it does offer hazard perception practice.

What it does do well at, however, is offering practical advice on booking your theory test and what to expect.

The app will cost you £4.99 to download.

2022 Driving Theory Test

Available on iOS and Android and licenced by the DVSA, this is 6 apps in 1. The other apps on our list are primarily focused on driving cars, but what if you’re studying for your motorcyclist, LGV or PCV licence?

Like the others, it includes mock questions, hazard perception video clips, the Highway Code and road sign revision. You’ll also be able to track your progress, with the neat feature of a personal trainer (one that won’t ask you for ten more push-ups). Your trainer will work out what areas you may benefit from further support and study in, and helps you to improve your understanding of these topics.

And how much will it set you back? Not a penny! The 2022 Driving Theory Test is free to download – perhaps that’s why it’s a UK bestseller.

Driving Theory Test Genie UK

With a massive array of multiple-choice questions, this app gives you the why of every answer – whether you got it right or not. We love this feature as it’s that little extra step needed to ensure full comprehension and make you the best driver possible.

Questions vary from simple to challenging, and it’s got a solution for those tougher ones: the ‘challenge bank’ will remember the answers you struggle on so you can revisit those areas.

It also works offline, meaning you can still practise when out of signal or on the tube.

However, the app features multiple choice questions only – you won’t find any hazard perception videos in here. Still, if the nitty-gritty of the Highway Code is what you need to improve on, this app’s a safe bet.

It’s available on iOS and Android and best of all, it’s free.

So, which app is best overall?

Young drivers face the costliest car insurance premiums, so if you’re looking to pinch every penny ahead of getting your full licence, we recommend the free apps 2022 Driving Theory Test and Driving Theory Test Genie UK. However, with any of these ready at your fingertips, you’re sure to be celebrating a pass first time!
